OUR STORY

The Palatinus: experience
T he Palatinus Grand Hotel is not just a hotel, it’s a living piece history in the heart of Pécs. A house stood on this site as early as 1695, home to craftsmen and workshops for centuries.
The present-day hotel’s predecessor was built in 1915 as the dream of Imre Hamerli, a member of the renowned glove-making family, who replaced the old family house with a modern and impressive hotel.
Originally a three-story building in a blend of Art Nouveau and late Eclectic styles,
it opened with 70 rooms, a café, and a grand ballroom – already ahead of its time. Over the years, the hotel was expanded and renovated, preserving its elegance and historic character.
The ballroom holds a special place in Hungarian musical history: on November 30, 1923, Béla Bartók – one of the greatest composers of the 20th century – performed here, forever inscribing the hotel in cultural memory.
Where the elegance
of the past comes to life
P alatinus has always been a home for the arts and society: balls, concerts, performances, later even a theater, cabaret, and rooftop bar filled its story. After a renovation in the 1970s, it reopened in 1989, blending historical charm with comfort.
The past lives on in its walls: the original staircase, fancy decorations, the atmosphere of the Bartók Hall, and every detail of its century-long story give the Palatinus Grand Hotel its unique character. This isn’t just a hotel, it’s Pécs’s living heritage.
A place for iconic encounters
A new chapter in a legendary story
F or decades, the hotel operated as part of the Danubius Hotels group under the name Hotel Palatinus City Center, until in 2020 it returned to local ownership – marking a new chapter. After a full-scale renovation, it will reopen its doors in 2025.
The goal of the reconstruction was to elevate this iconic place by combining its centuries-old heritage with 21st-century comfort.
